YAESU Comes through!

Just a recap on my new FT2DR. First I want to reiterate I love the capability of this radio. Wow! What innovation. But after having the unit for about 2 weeks the touch screen stopped responding. I contacted YAESU in California and described the issue. Unfortunately there was no quick fix and I had to send the radio in. I just got it back after about three weeks. Apparently the screen cracked somewhere in the housing of the radio but was not visible to the user. YAESU was diligent and helpful with great customer service. They replaced the screen and I got it back in perfect working order. So here's what you need to know. Great radio, but a little fragile. DO NOT DROP IT OR Bump IT into something. I'm not sure how mine cracked but it must have been as I was carrying it around. If you need rugged use radio you might try a non touch screen model. There was no charge to fix it other than shipping costs as it was under warranty. Giving the radio four stars for the innovation but minus one star for the durability. GigaParts was there to give me advice and ready to help if YAESU wasn't there. Thank you to both YAESU and GigaParts for excellent customer service.

So far so great!

Lots of features that I have yet to learn, but putting in storage the three channels I spend most of my time on was quick and easy. Out of the box it was working in under 5 minutes. I get a good report from other stations. I did have to turn up the mic gain because apparently I talk softly or don't hold it close enough to my mouth. But that took care of that.
Overall
great innovation but poorly made.

Really great concept however the hardware is not good. Had mine a week and the touch screen stopped working. Also the battery life is short but it has a lot of operations dressing the battery. You will need to buy a spare battery and the rapid charger. Without it charging takes longer than use time. I will edit my review to comment on the level of customer service as soon as I can. Gigaparts however has been great.

Great radio

Great radio. What Yaesu should've done with this radio is make the PTT more ergonomic like they have done on the Ft-70 and a few other Ht radios they offer and a color touchscreen instead of a B&W screen. Hopefully they will feature those two on a future model.

Happy with the radio despite the whistling.

I am enjoying the radio. There is a bit of a learning curve but the extensive included manual, additional manual downloads available direct from the manufacturer (for me, APRS), and Youtube help have made my setup complete without any needed PC programming. I agree with the first reviewer that there is a distinct whistling noise on the receive end, primarily in digital. It is loud, far beyond anything I have seen with my Kenwood and Icom D-Star or Hytera TRBO digital transceivers. I assume this may be corrected by a future firmware update. This sound issue is mitigated by the great battery life, a vibration function that I didn't know about until reading the manual after purchase, and great clarity in both Rx and Tx.

Good but not best

Reviewing yaesu ft2dr.
Pros
1 Touch screen is very user friendly and makes it easy on menu.
2 Wide reception coverage
3 GPS is fun especially when hiking
4 SD card option is very handy.
5 outstanding battery life.

Cons.
1 when switching in auto fm mode or digital then during reception wisteling sound is present and it is very annoying.
2 screen is sometimes not responsive.
3 when scan button is pushed then sometimes screen changes but it's not scanning and frequency digits are hung up and not changing as it should during scan.
Overall its great unit but with a few bugs. And I'm sure other brands are not perfect either. Not every antenna will pick up AM radio broadcast mode. I have two antennas and one is good for Am broadcast and the other one is for 900mhz.
