Eh. It's OK!

This radio isn't my favorite. I understand it's meant to be really simple to get a new ham on the air quickly. But it lacks a lot of basic features that mean said new ham will outgrow it quickly. It has a high quality transceiver, a good screen, a durable build and a pretty decent battery. But the inability to set up any kind of scan group (can only scan all or nothing) and the fact that the scan mechanism is buried as one of the last menu options in a long list says a lot. The hard keys aren't configurable. The MARS mod is a little bit of a goofy situation, many low-cost radios that this would be judged against can allow this via a simple menu option (looking at you Baofeng) rather than charging $10 for a bit flip.

Worthy modification
Review by Dennis
The MARS/CAP modification was simple and worked exactly as described. The process wasn’t really any different from unlocking other handheld radios, other than requiring a unique code specific to the QRZ-1. Everything functioned perfectly after the modification, and I had no issues. If you’re looking to expand the radio’s transmit capabilities, this is a straightforward and worthwhile upgrade.

Excellent radio

When GigParts and QRZ offered this radio, at their original very inexpensive it turns out to be an outstanding radio. It is said to be a TYT TH-UV88 special setup from GigParts and QRZ. Sound quality to my ears is better, warmer, then Tidradio H3 and H8, and Baofeng UV5R and its variants. It is loud yet not distorted, and it pulls in signals quite well. For simplex and repeater use, folks are quite surprised how good it sounds on their radio, always giving me a good signal report. Be mindful it is a straight forward 5 Watt radio, does not have a gazillion whistles and bells. It is an outstanding EDC, in a go-bag, in the glove box, for emergencies, backup radio, and the like. For almost a year it was my only radio and served me well. When it arrived I then purchased their USC-C rechargeable battery, the original battery charged in the cradle, and a 771 antenna as well. A few years ago it was given free to new Technicians, send in their information, then they began selling them for about $20-ish. To put this in perspective, it has working without any issues for a few years. Compared the QRZ-1 to my four Tidradio H8 Gen2 of which three gave up the ghost, and six Tidradio H3 of which five gave up the ghost; yes one of each remains, this QRZ-1 Explorer has been without fault. QRZ-1 Explorer is for the money an outstanding radio.

It's a good little radio. I say little because it will fit in your pocket. With it only being 5w, it makes a good QRP radio when hooked to an external antenna. The speaker mic they have for it is a standard 2pin replacement style mic. It does work and has clear audio. I do recommend getting the ext. battery, MARS mod, and a good aftermarket 8" antenna. If you're going to get a speaker mic for, I recommend getting a heavy duty or Motorola style mic, or at least an IP54 rated mic.
Mine has an HYS 8" whip and I have various mic that I can use for mine.
I would high recommend getting this radio if for nothing else but a backup.
