Multi-talented Desktop Receiver

This radio is the best of both worlds - a highly sensitive receiver with a direct sampling software-defined front end for sensitivity and the user interface, double or triple conversion stages for selectivity, and a DSP final audio back end for listening to - in a compact desktop cabinet. The big obvious feature is the touch screen "Spectrum Scope" waterfall display, which is sharp and fast to update. It also lets you scroll through the control menus by fingertip. Remote control software is available (at extra cost), but it's not really needed unless you want to run it on a local LAN or on the internet. It includes a nice "clicky" tuning knob which can be adjusted to remove the clicks if that's your preference, and has three main knobs that default to scan speed, AF gain, and bandwidth shaping. When pushed in, the knobs offer related menus - for example, the 'B" dial is normally AF gain - volume - but when pushed offers RF gain, bass, treble, and squelch on the screen - touch one to select it and then the knob adjusts the levels. This is a serious piece of kit for the home enthusiast. It's an SDR radio in a compact cabinet with a WIDE band coverage. One more thing - for nice to have accessories, there's a handle kit that adds a side handle and side feet (part no. MB-123) and a matching speaker with a built-in power supply (SP-39AD) which is the same height as the R8600. You'll need a 15V power supply or the speaker or the inline power supply. Much like a ham rig, it doesn't come with one, but happily it has a conventional power connector - not a power pole.

The Icom IC-R8600 is an absolutely incredible wideband receiver. Its reception capabilities, spanning from 10kHz to 3GHz, are phenomenal, making it perfect for a wide range of listening activities. The multiple digital mode decoding is a standout feature. Whether you're into HF, VHF, UHF, or digital modes, this receiver handles it all with ease. The build quality is excellent, and the user interface is intuitive. For serious hobbyists or professionals needing a high-performance receiver, the Icom IC-R8600 is a best-in-class choice.
