Overall
Best Programming Software!
Review by Jim Siemons
I have to tilt my hand and expose my cards a bit. I have a big bias here. I LOVE and find it critical to know how to program most every radio that I have from the faceplate. In other words, I like to manually program my radios. I have some commercial radios where that is not a practical option, but for most of my Part 90 and all my Part 97 radios, I definitely spend time to learn the dark arts (sometimes it's not that dark) of manual programming. Now that I've said all that, when you need to setup a sophisticated frequency plan in your radio that may include a hundred or hundreds of frequencies and channels, you really need software. Additionally, if you want all your radios (and I do) to operate more or less the same, and have their memories in more/less the same locations - then software is really the tool you need to make that happen. In addition to programming all the frequencies you may need for EmComm, local clubs, traveling around the country, and other frequencies you might find important to monitor, you can configure at a very deep level every kind of function and feature of your radio. If you radio is sophisticated, you may be amazed as to what you can do. Having a radio that is configured perfectly for you is a lot like buying shoes that actually fit! Over the years, RT Systems programming software used to only come with the software and you would have to purchase the cable separately. Sometimes at hamfests, they would work great deals - but if you had to purchase from fine vendors like GigaParts, you may not get that lucky. Today, at $49 from GigaParts with a cable - it's kind of a steal. I like CHIRP, but I love RT Systems. Additionally, I don't feel like I'm doing something illicit or an activity that is going to brick my radio when I use RT Systems. Go for it!
