I bought this for the APRS option when I am hiking but am now on Wires-x and talking all over the world! I'm glad I spent a little extra to get a radio that I can grow with as a new ham - excellent quality and functionality!

One of the best looking HTs out there

I really love the form factor of this little rig. Very short and thickness is just right. Like how they integrated the GPS antenna on top center, looks sleek. The touchscreen is also very nice and easy to use. Very responsive and no lag. One of the best looking handhelds I've seen. Price is also not that expensive for what you get.

I received this radio from GigaParts and I have truly enjoyed trying it out! To my mind, despite the price drops it is still very pricey, but the long list of features make it worth the purchase. I am very glad that I made this my first "real" handheld. My mind boggles at how SDR technology has (and will continue to) revolutionize ham radios. One wonders what 10 years will bring!
There are lots of upsides to this unit. The scope is wonderful and quickly helps you focus in on active frequencies. The nested menu structure takes some getting used to, but once learned, leaves a flat menu in the dust. Again, the feature list is awesome and too long to itemize. You truly get what you pay for!
Downsides? Well, yes, enough that I am being nice in giving 4 stars. The charging indicator is unreliable but hopefully future firmware updates will fix that. The touch screen is responsive but should have been made larger for fat fingers. It (almost) feels like a step backwards compared to the FT-2DR. The supplied battery is too small, especially if GPS and APRS are active. Always have a charged spare around! Next, dump the supplied ducky. I use a large Diamond SRH770S at home and a smaller SRH320A in the field. Both do a great job.
My biggest beef is the speaker. It's woefully tinny and definitely not worthy for such a great handheld. Side by side with my cheap Baofeng, the contrast is even more stark and appalling. Digital comms sound worse (even on VW), if you can imagine. You can alleviate the issue a bit by opening both the rubber flaps on the right side but why should I have to for such an expensive radio?
In the end, I'm still glad I made this purchase. I love it! But Yaesu, if you're listening: _please_ give the next gen a bigger battery, touchscreen and speaker!

Excellent radio, but not a VX8DR...

As a user of a VX-8DR I can only use it as a comparative basis to make an evaluation of FT3DR.
The radio is an excellent companion, despite fearing some damage to the display, the colors and resolution help a lot making navigation through the functions very easy, it would only be better if the touch screen was capacitive.
I'm a regular user of APRS and after a week of use I already noticed some bugs, but nothing that a next firmware update does not solve, however in general typing is faster and easier than using the keyboard.
The automatic mode selection option is very interesting as I don't have to worry about the type to be used at the reception.
An evolution in relation to the VX8 was the integrated GPS and the speed with which it can determine the location, is almost instantaneous!
Also noteworthy are the channel and volume selectors on top of the radio, also with the option to invert them, and the use of a memory card, now I can finally record the conversations for future reference, in addition I can back up the configuration and of his memory.
What should be improved is actually a problem that all HT's present, the antenna is mediocre making the whole work underutilized because the maximum available radio power is not used, it would not be bad I found a Diamond or an MFJ in the box together!
Overall it is an excellent HT, but in many details the VX8 still gives a lesson!

Everything I could Need in a HT

Been using the FT3DR for a few weeks and it has performed very well so far. Being able to listen to just about every AM or FM signal from 500khz to 1Ghz is great. The built in scope isn't perfect but it works at the same ranges so if you are hunting for a distant AM signal it is still helpful. Quality to my local repeater and simplex sound great but obviously limited by the 5W transmit and Rubber Duck Antenna, but what do you expect for a HT. APRS is pretty easy to setup and works well. The screen is actually pretty easy to read in the sun, looks very nice, and is pretty accurate for touches. The whole unit feels solid.
Only downsides are the battery takes a while to charge and the charging indicator is kind of weird. If it is full charged and you unplug it and plug it back in the charge bar goes back to the beginning, almost like it is on a timer and not actually reading the battery power. The other problem in you can't filter out APRS positions from other stations by range. Other than those two minior complaints it is a solid radio that has been a joy to use so far. I recommend it if you are looking for a good HT with pretty much everything in one package.

I preordered the Yaesu FT-3DR and received it about a month ago. I’ve put it thru it’s paces and I’m very happy with the results of the radio.
Love the great new features. I used the FT3 during hurricane Dorian. Great EmCom radio.
This radio is my daily driver and go-to when it counts. Knowing what I know about this radio, I would still buy it again. I highly recommend the FT-3DR.
