This component offers defense against nearby lightning strikes that could otherwise damage connected equipment (though no device can protect from a direct hit). In the event of decreased receiver sensitivity or an unexplained increase in transmit SWR after severe weather, the ARC PILL should be checked for damage. It can be accessed by unscrewing a brass plug and checked with an ohmmeter for a short or measurable resistance, or for physical signs of damage like cracking or discoloration. Replacement tubes (e.g., Littelfuse P/N: CG21000 or equivalent) are readily available and non-polarized for easy installation.

Proper grounding is paramount for effective protection. Connect the switch block to your station ground via the shortest practical route, ideally using solid copper wire, as copper braid is less effective for static discharge. A dedicated grounding tab is provided for this connection.
