My RMS VHF node runs on this

No complaints on this one. Easy to program even without spending $50 on a cable and programming software. Does Wires X, but I have never used that. Just perfect for the purpose it was built for. Simple, rugged, powerful, large display, clear audio, 2 meter perfection, beast of a radio.

Best 2 Meter mobile transceiver for the price

Like it's predecessor, the FT2980r leads the pack when it comes to 2 meter radios. It is the most powerful with a full 80 watts output on high, and like it's ancestor the FT2900 it is tougher than any other mobile rig you can find.
The only thing it lacks is a data jack for operating digital modes. Perhaps they will add a digital port or USB in the future, but right now this is as good as it gets. It would be easy to make up an adapter cable set for the audio in and out so working digital can be done, but not without some expertise in electronics. Perhaps a cable solution is already available, but I haven't seen one up to this point. For under $140.00 you will not find it's equal and once it is programmed you can't find a better 2 meter transceiver.

This rig is easy to program with a racing engine under the hood. Run it easy or run it all the way up to 80Watts. It is not a luxury thing. It only does 2 meters analog but that is what I wanted.
