Icom IC-7300MK2 HF/50 MHz Transceiver: HF Excellence, Evolved
The IC-7300MK2 is the next-generation HF/50 MHz SDR transceiver with Enhanced Performance and Even More Excitement. Key upgrades include an improved RMDR of 105 DB typical , lower power consumption , an HDMI Port for external display , and a Built in CW Decoder.
Enhanced Receiver Performance and Stability
The IC-7300MK2 builds on its legacy with significant performance improvements over the IC-7300 for serious operators.
- Improved RMDR: The Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range (RMDR) is improved to about 105 DB typical (at 2 KiloHertz separation), drastically reducing blocking and interference from strong adjacent signals.
- Superior TX Phase Noise: Transmit Phase Noise characteristics are improved by about 12 DB (at 1 KiloHertz frequency separation) compared to the previous model IC-7300. The superior Phase Noise reduces noise components in both receive and transmit signals. The typical TX Phase Noise is -139 DBc per Hertz at 1 KiloHertz separation.
- Lower Power and Heat: Through component selection and DC power optimization, the IC-7300MK2 reduces heat generation, enabling stable operation during extended operating periods, such as contest operation. RX standby power consumption is reduced from 0.9 Ampere to 0.7 Amp (typical).
New Connectivity and Operational Features
The IC-7300MK2 introduces several firsts for Icom's HF/50 MegaHertz radio line.
- HDMI Port for an External Display: Incorporates an HDMI Port for external display connection. Operating information like frequency, scope, waterfall, and menus can be shown on a large monitor. Audio can also be output through HDMI to the display's speakers.
- Built in CW Decoder: The radio can now decode Morse code signals without using a PC or other external equipment. The decode filter automatically follows the target signal, and keying speed is automatically adjusted.
- USB Type C with Dual COM Plus Audio: Features a USB Type C port with dual virtual COM ports and audio In/Output. Use a single USB cable for two simultaneous applications, such as FT8, logging, and contest software.
- Simplified RS BA1 Remote Control: The addition of an Ethernet connector (LAN Port) means a base station computer is not required for remote operation with the RS BA1 (Version 2) software. You are able to remotely turn the radio ON or OFF through the Internet.
- RX Antenna IN/OUT Connectors: Dedicated RX Antenna IN/OUT (SMA) connectors enable optimized reception by allowing you to take advantage of specific antenna characteristics. External bandpass filters and preamps can be connected here.

What's the difference between the Icom IC-7300 and the IC-7300 MK2?
The Icom IC-7300 revolutionized the entry-level HF market with its Direct Sampling SDR architecture and intuitive color touchscreen. The newer IC-7300MK2 builds on that success, offering significant performance boosts and modern connectivity features.
Key Differentiators: Performance and Connectivity
While both radios share the core Direct Sampling SDR technology, a large 4.3-inch color touch display, and a built-in automatic antenna tuner, the IC-7300MK2 brings meaningful upgrades in three key areas:
1. Enhanced Receiver Performance
The IC-7300MK2 features improved receiver characteristics crucial for operating in crowded band conditions.
- Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range (RMDR): The IC-7300MK2 boosts RMDR to approximately 105 dB (at 2 kHz separation), an improvement of about 8 dB over the original IC-7300's performance of around 97 dB. This means the MK2 version handles strong, nearby signals much better, making it easier to pull out weak DX signals.
- Phase Noise: Transmit phase noise characteristics are also improved by about 12 dB in the IC-7300MK2, resulting in a cleaner signal on both transmit and receive.
2. Modern Connectivity & Remote Operation
The IC-7300MK2 has been significantly upgraded with new ports and built-in networking capabilities.
- External Display (HDMI): The IC-7300MK2 includes an HDMI port—a first for Icom's HF/50 MHz radios—allowing you to connect a large monitor to display the spectrum scope, waterfall, and operating menus. The original IC-7300 does not have this output.
- Simplified Remote Control (LAN): The MK2 includes a built-in LAN port that, when used with the optional RS-BA1 Version 2 software, allows for PC-less remote operation over the internet or a network. The original IC-7300 requires a base station computer to serve the remote connection.
- USB Type-C: The legacy USB-B port is replaced with a modern USB Type-C port that offers dual virtual COM ports and audio, making it easier to run two applications simultaneously (e.g., FT8 and logging software) with a single cable.
3. New Operator-Centric Features
The MK2 adds functionality that enhances usability, especially for CW and field operations.
- Built-in CW Decoder: The IC-7300MK2 includes a built-in CW decoder to display Morse code on the screen without needing an external computer. The IC-7300 lacks this feature.
- Separate RX Antenna Ports: Dedicated RX Antenna IN/OUT connectors (SMA type) are included on the MK2, allowing you to easily integrate external low-noise receive antennas, filters (like a QRM eliminator), or preamps into the receiver chain.
- Power Efficiency: The MK2 has reduced its RX standby current draw from approximately 0.9 A to 0.7 A (a 23% reduction), making it more efficient for field-day, SOTA, or battery-powered portable operations.
