Great Radio and Awesome Service

Buy it last Thursday came the next day. WOW! Did not expect that. Radio is well package no damage. Plug it in with my antenna and power supply, flip the switch and it booth right up. Put in my favorite repeater and did a radio check and ask for Demonstration. Got someone back from Oregon and a bunch of HAM return my Demo request without problem and hearing me loud and clear. Could not ask for anything more. Got to talk to someone from San Francisco on 20 meter considering my HF antenna is just a mobile quad band antenna. All in all I am a very happy owner of this awesome radio. For the fast service from Gigaparts, I want to thank you all. You guys did a great job with my purchase. I will buy all of my radio needs with you guys from now on.

I bought this Radio mostly for a VHF and UHF all mode with the plus of C4FM wiresX. I also own a FTdx1200 and my main HF radio. But at times I would rather use the FT-991A for HF since this little radio can really dig out the weak signals better.

A Great First Radio

I am new to ham radio and this is my first base station rig. Having now made contacts on CW, SSB, FM Simplex, FM Duplex and digital C4FM I am impressed. This radio has so many features that it takes a fair amount of time and experimenting to maximize its performance and although the learning curve is steep, it is worth it, in better final performance. First I used the RT systems programmer and cable to program the radio. This makes setting up the radio much easier for use with repeaters and later for rearranging frequencies in numerical order. Second, although the instructions clearly state the need for an external antenna tuner with a G5RV antenna, this radio can tune a G5RV _ jr_ on 20, 10 and 6m. It can handle a second antenna for UHF/VHF such as an Arrow J Pole. Third is hardware. You will need a good power supply. You should upgrade this rig with an external speaker that has an RCA connector. You may need to make your own custom connector to use a simple straight key. The M-100 mic works out of the box with this rig. The "waterfall" display can also be used to help eliminate sources of RFI as you turn off devices/lights in your environment. Fourth is menu driven features and here things get complicated. You really should consider finding a mentor (an "Elmer") to help you with all the features of this radio. Usually if I could not make a contact it was MY user error. Learn to use the ALC display to set the mic gain on SSB and consider using a mic gain of 50 on FM. Programming the standard memories, memory groups for scanning, and band stack memories is a must for multi-mode, multi-band operation. Finally, although the C4FM digital mode is Yaesu specific, it is extremely easy to use and communicate with other C4FM capable Yaesu rigs. So a great first rig that should challenge you for quite a while.

I absolutely LOVE this radio after two months, and would purchase another one again in a heartbeat. I'm a fairly new ham and don't have a lot of experience, and NONE with other radios except for a used Kenwood 2m mobile in my truck. This radio has been fairly easy to learn and use so far, but I haven't dove deep into the all the bells and whistles yet, and it has a bunch! I've gotten perfect signal reports so far from as far as Italy (from Mississippi) on 40m with my Alpha Delta antenna, and as near as my local friends on 2m. I've had several comments on the good sound quality of the stock included microphone, and love the sound quality of the internal speaker. I live immediately adjacent to high tension power lines with severe radio interference, but still pull in stations with minimal noise thanks to the built in filters. It has a built in handle on the side, as it's billed as a portable radio, and I can't wait to take it to the field and throw a wire up in a tree. The built in tuner requires a fairly resonant antenna, but I've never had any trouble with any of the antennas I've attached.

I still can't get over it's quietness when not receiving a signal. I have my squelch on 0. Noise still shows on the S meter and the Spectrum,, but you don't hear it. The radio discerns between voice and noise, so that you hear the voice, but not the noise. I'm speaking of the UHF/VHF bands: 2M , 70cm bands. I'm still working on an HF antenna. Programming is super easy, with on screen menus, it's super easy to operate also.
There is a mobile mounting bracket you can get, but it would fit in a truck better than a car. And with the weight of the radio (9.5 lbs), you sure don't want to mount it to any plastic. And a 3 year warranty!

This is literally a Shack In The Box...All bands 160M-70cm. 50w on UHF/VHF. C4FM. Great signal reports. This should come with programming software of it's own though.

I bought this radio as a upgrade 897-D I could not ask for better reception then this radio is doing and with the MD 100 desk microphone the audio output is phenomenal. Yes this radio is a little expensive but for those who want the best, I highly recommend this the Yaesu 991A.
